SoRaspy: Serena Williams jumps for joy after surviving Wimbledon upset bid
New York Daily News classifies this as their Sports Picture of the Day! Check out Serena as she was put to the test Saturday during third-round play on the famed grass courts at the All-England Club. Serena hit a Wimbledon-record 23 aces, held every service game and narrowly escaped an upset bid by Zheng Jie, winning a wild 9-7 third set to beat China’s Zheng Jie and advance to the fourth round.
Williams stated, “I just wanted to get through that match, the last thing I wanted to do was lose.”
The 5-foot-4 1/2 Zheng, seeded 25th, played with little flash but plenty of consistency, committing just 17 unforced errors. She hung in the match despite hitting only one ace. “It’s a tough match, because she has big serve,” Zheng said. “It’s very difficult against her on the grass court.”
