David Beckham’s actions near the end of the Galaxy’s loss last weekend to San Jose will cost him another game.┬áMajor League Soccer’s disciplinary committee announced Thursday the star midfielder has been suspended one game and fined an undisclosed sum for “confrontational and provocative behavior” during and after L.A.’s 4-3 defeat Saturday night at Stanford Stadium.

The committee, in a release, said it “considered his conduct unacceptable and detrimental to the League’s public image.”

Head coach Bruce Arena was fined an undisclosed amount for his criticism of referee Hilario Grajeda following the match.

Beckham, impatient as Sam Cronin sat in front of San Jose’s goal after a stoppage-time scrum in the box, twice booted balls at the Earthquakes midfielder and Grajeda, who was standing next to Cronin. The second struck Cronin and then Grajeda, who gave Beckham a yellow card.

That led to a one-game ban, for yellow-card accumulation, that Beckham served during Wednesday night’s 2-1 loss to Philadelphia. The new suspension will force him out of Sunday’s game at Chicago.

Beckham, who has not spoken to the media since the incident, apparently was frustrated that Cronin was wasting what little time was left in the match. After the final whistle, the Galaxy star had to be separated by teammates from a couple of Earthquakes players.

“Obviously, the referee had no clue what was going on. All they were doing was delaying the game,” Arena said afterward. “I don’t think the officiating was good. There were a couple handballs in the penalty area. He did a poor job managing the game.

“The reason there was that disturbance at the end of the game, I think, is because he didn’t take control of things. Two competitive teams and things boiled over. I thought the management of the game by the referee was atrocious.”

Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee was suspended one game after throwing a ball in frustration in the direction of referee Silviu Petrescu during the Galaxy’s May 26 loss at Houston. FC Dallas’ Brek Shea was suspended three games earlier this season for kicking a ball at a linesman.
