SoRaspy: NYC Phone Booths Will Double as Wi-Fi Hotspots
Phone booths may seem like relics of a bygone era, but New York City plans to modernize the 12,000 that are still in existence by turning them into Wi-Fi hotspots, ABC News is reporting.
The NYC Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications today activated 10 booths: six in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn, and one in Queens. The Bronx and Staten Island will receive Wi-Fi phone booths in the near future.
The wireless networks will cover a 200-foot radius and will not be password protected (so be careful). The best part is that the bill for this project was picked up by advertising behomeths Van Wagner and Titan—not a single public penny was spent.
