According to a Time.com article, physical inactivity is now a global pandemic. Reports published in the journal Lancet present that lack of exercise is the cause for 1 out of every 10 premature deaths. That is roughly as many deaths caused by smoking.

“About 5.3 million of the 57 million deaths worldwide in 2008 could be attributed to inactivity, the new report estimates, largely due to four major diseases: heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, breast cancer and colon cancer.”

The article goes on to suggest that if physical inactivity decreased by 10 percent close to 533,000 deaths per year would be averted. Current recommendations are 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week which is equal to about a half-hour of brisk walking five times a week. To read the full article click here.
