With the inauguration looming, there’s been a lot of bad news, but after weeks of that, we finally have some good news to report. You remember that messed-up, racist kid who opened fire on a bible study group in 2015? Well, they decided to give hime the death penalty. 22-year-old Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death for the racially motivated killing of nine black people at South Carolina church.
The self-avowed white supremacist was convicted of 33 federal charges including hate crimes. What’s odd about the whole thing, though, is this kid actually seems to want this sentence. Speaking to the jury, he said, “I don’t know what good it would anyway” if they spared his life. The jury deliberated for approximately three hours before resurfacing with a verdict.
The jury will issue a formal verdict on Wednesday morning. In the aftermath of announcing the sentence, the 22-year-old killer stood up and requested to be appointed a different layers and to file for a retrial. These requests were apparently denied. Almost 24 friends and relatives of those victims at the Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston testified during the trial.
However, none of them appealed to the jury to get him a death sentence. It’s not clear why it took almost two years for the trial to finally be brought to a close, but it’s presumably due to court congestion. The verdict was unanimous and Mr. Roof’s expression didn’t change in the slightest after the jury read their verdict to the court.
This of course was the right decision considering Roof not only confessed to the killings, but also tried to justify them without remorse. It’s currently unknown when he’ll be killed, or what method of killing him they will use, but what we do know for sure is his days are numbered. I expect we’ll get more details on the sentencing date in the coming weeks
