Disney’s ‘Oliver Twist’ Musical Could Star Ice Cube

Disney Studios is teaming up with Ice Cube and Thomas Kail, the Tony-winning director of Hamilton, to give Charles Dickens’ classic Oliver Twist a modern, musical spin.

Oliver Twist is one of Dickens’ most iconic works and tells the story of an orphan child who transitions from a life as a vulnerable, exploited child laborer to the sidekick of a pick pocketing gang leader named Fagin.

The popular story has been adapted many times, most popularly by Disney as an animated movie, 1988’s Oliver and Company.

The forthcoming adaption will be a more contemporary musical with sources describing it as crossing many genres, including hip hop.

Cube and Kwatinetz are writing the treatment, and it being reported that Cube is somewhat attached to play Fagin.

That’s right, 47-year-old Ice Cube could potentially make his musical debut.

The former N.W.A. rapper turned actor and producer most recently produced the critically acclaimed Straight Outta Compton and Ride Along 2.

Fans can check Cube out in Fist Fight, the New Line comedy which he also executive produced that is set to open Feb. 17.
