A lot of comparisons going on in the hip-hop world right now. However, we’re not complaining because this always makes for good discussions. Styles P of popular hip-hop group The Lox just recently called out Toronto’s own Drake stating that he can’t be compared to either Kendrick Lamar or J. Cole because Drake does not write his own lyrics.
If you recall the nasty feud that took place between Meek Mill and Drake back in 2015, Meek Mill was the first rapper to air all of Drake’s dirty laundry claiming that Drizzy uses ghostwriters to write all his hit songs. Well, that rumor claimed to have some truth to it and also had a lot of hip-hop artists questioning Drake’s true skills. In the interview with Vlad TV, Styles was accompanied by his group members Sheek Louch and So Raspy founder Jada Kiss. Styles P had the following to say:
“I like Drake as an artist. Before I found out about Drake’s alleged use of ghostwriters, I was like ‘Okay, Drake, Kendrick, Cole, they in the battle for it.’ Once he got a writer, he’s not in the battle with Cole or Kendrick in my eyes no more. He’s now with Swizz, Diddy and Kanye. There’s nothing wrong with that. If that’s what you do, that’s what you do.”
Jadakiss and Sheek Louch didn’t seem to disagree with their group member at all. Since The Lox come from an era where writing your own lyrics was mandatory and going to get a ghostwriter was not an option, Styles P’s claims make a lot of sense. Sheek Louch even chimed in on the matter stating:
“MC Lyte said years ago, ‘Whoever writes your rhymes mine as well hold your microphone.’ “
The three rappers also went on to suggest rap mentors for today’s hip-hop newcomers. This actually might not be a bad idea. Watch the full Vlad TV interview below.
